If I change the blog url on this page

    my domain/WordPress/wp-admin/options-general.php

    from mydomain/WordPress/ to mydomain/blog

does that mean that all the files from that “WordPress” sub-dir will be moved to the new “blog” sub-dir?

I just want to make sure that it is that simple and that nothing will get screwed up before I do it. TIA.

  • Unfortunately it’s not “that” simple. Changing the URIs in admin > Options > Genral does not change the real location of your blog, those URIs should only reflect the reality!
However, if you want to change the foldername from WordPress to blog, do the following:
    1. in admin > Options > General change it from “WordPress” to “blog”
    2. DO NOT try to open/see your blog
    3. Repeat, do NOT try to open your blog ??
    4. Go to your FTP client and rename the folder WordPress on your server to “blog”
    5. Now you can try to see your blog…

    just the blog address URI

    or

the wordpress address URI too which appears right below it?

you didn’t mention stopping the winmysqladmin process so I assume since I’m not writing to the db at this time that it doesn’t matter

finally, I already put a “blog” folder out there via ftp the other day, I’ll assume that that is okay too unless…

(better safe than sorry so I’ll wait)

    thx moshu

    Both.
I don’t know anything about winmysqladmin – but I also assume don’t touch it.
If you have bothe the old/existing folder “WordPress” and another one “blog” – then you’ll have to move all the WP files and folders, which is more work.
If “blog” is empty, just delete it and rename “WordPress” to blog: no need to move files around.

This is what I got from that little operation:

    billy-girlardo.com/blog/wp-login.php?redirect_to=/WordPress/wp-admin/options-general.php?updated=true

but now I see that Filezilla is not letting me copy the whole WordPress sub-dir to the new blog sub-dir anyway so it looks like I’ll just have to leave it for now

if winmysqladmin doesn’t have anything to do with WP, I think I’m in big trouble lol

    thx bud

EDIT: shit, now I can’t login to WP because that is the screen I get when I go to login, now what?

Which file holds my login path? I’ll look in login.php first.

I don’t suppose it would help to download the WordPress folder via ftp from the server would it?

I can see the data but can’t log into WP, even if I substitute billy-girlardo.com/blog/ that I changed it to with the original billy-girlardo.com/wordpress/ so do I need to reinstall WP on my box and use the original info (God this sounds fun!) as best I can to get WP back up and running?

Are you really a moderator? I should’ve known something was up when you didn’t know what winmysqladmin was!

I guess that’s what I get for using freeware!!!!!!!!

    1. It seems you didn’t change the URI values before moving the stuff.
    2. I told you what’s the easier way – you went to complicated way.
    3. I don’t see the relation between being a mod and knowing what winmysqladmin is ??
    4. If all this stuff is happening on your box and doesn’t work, you should learn first how to set up your server and that is not a WP issue. We do not offer support for server settings.
    5. I still think what I wrote in my first reply in this thread should have worked if followed step by step. It worked for everybody else.

I definitely changed the sub-dirs first, I don’t care what you say. It is not server related because you can see the data if you go to the billy-girlardo.com/wordpress/ url, it’s the software that is screwed now because I can’t login.

After I deleted the pre-made “blog” sub-dir as mentioned above, I told WP to point to “blog” but apparently Filezilla didn’t create it so now the software is set to point to that “blog” sub-dir and that is the only way to login again but since that “blog” sub-dir is empty (only existing because I just recreated it inside Filezilla manually, apparently I should have left it as it was), I’m still stuck with data I can see thru the “wordpress” sub-dir if I go to that URL but a corrupted WP install.

I even rebooted and when that didn’t work, I reloaded WP figuring I could just start from scratch. That didn’t work but maybe because I didn’t use add/remove, I just deleted the folder, I’ll try that with a fresh install now. Sorry to gripe at you but obviously I am beside myself right now.

EDIT: hell, it’s not even in the add\remove list which makes me wonder why my fresh install didn’t work a minute ago. Maybe cause I was using my old bookmark…

And I am still saying you didn’t follow the instructions, so don’t blame me.

It was never supposed to create it. Never said that. Read again step 1 (2, 3) and 4. Keyword: rename it.

I repeat again the instructions as they were:
    1. Change the URIs in admin from WordPress to blog
    2. Do not open the blog in a browser
    3. via FTP rename the WordPress folder to blog
