wp-admin uploads vs wp-content upload

Hi, we have a e-commerce site that has fairly a lot of products and when looked into the file directory of the site there about 3gb only for images. but the funny thing is the dir wp-admin/wp-content/uploads has the same info as
wp-content/uploads. what is the difference between the two. couldnt they be called from the same directory and save us some space?
