• I’m not sure if this is a plugin issue, e.g. Your Members, or WordPress causing the problem so I’m posting here and in the plugin forum.

When I try to log in to wp-admin, the p/w field clears and it remains on the login screen. I don’t get a p/w error. An incorrect p/w does generate an error. The only thing that works sometimes is a re-boot. I have noticed that when I go into WP after this problem the menu on the dashboard initially seems double spaced, it then corrects itself. Any ideas?

    Your Members Version 11.0.8
Support Information: PHP Version 5.3.9, WordPress version: 3.3.1

  • Have you tried a different browser?

    Have you tried
    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I have tried Opera, Explorer & Chrome, plus another PC.

I’m fairly new to WP so I’m not aware of the implications of changing the theme. Mine is a pretty complex one (Striking). I have deactivated all the plugins that aren’t really fundamental to the way the site works. Again, I’m not sure what the effect is of turning off my membership system (Your Members), for example. Meh! I guess I can try and if it all goes tits up, I can restore ??

I have deleted folders for redundant plugins. Is that what you mean by “resetting the plugins folder”?

Thanks. Sorry for the stupid questions.

    Not stupid questions.

Renaming the plugins folder will force wp to open with no plugins. Reverting to the default theme will rule out a theme problem. Then you restore the plugins one-by-one to see if any are messing you up. Just a matter of ruling things out.

An incorrect p/w does generate an error.

What is the error? You should just get a screen “shake” and a wrong password message.

Yes, a wrong p/w does exactly that but as I said in my OP “When I try to log in to wp-admin [with the correct p/w], the p/w field clears and it remains on the login screen. I don’t get a p/w error.” The lack of an error is the odd thing.

OK, I will try those suggestions…I think I’ll make very sure I have a complete b/u first, also I will need to make an announcement on the site that it will be off-line for a little.
