• I have 2 different sites on the same shared server which have started to send me to 404 error pages whenever I try to complete tasks in the wp-admin area of the website. I have scoured the internet with anyone who has experienced this same issue.

The only plugin these two sites share is Gravity Forms. I have tried deactivating…doesn’t work to adjust issue.

I have refreshed the permalinks with no success.

I have added Error Document message to top of 1 of the website’s .htaccess files. Someone discussed it might be a web server error.

I have tested .php and .html on the web server to make sure it isn’t a server error.

The error ONLY comes when I am working INSIDE the wp-admin area. I am not having issues viewing the Dashboard or logging in.

If I refresh my browser or go back, SOMETIMES I will see that my task was completed in spite of the error. Also, if I keep trying, eventually it somehow gets unstuck and lets me complete a task, like view a form entry.

I don’t know how to view the Rewrite rules for the admin area, but the frontend looks and works fine on both websites.

Anyone have other areas to check or experienced similar issues in the past? What am I missing?

  • Did you try temporarily renaming .htaccess to take it out-of-play altogether, and test. Your website should work fine though the urls may not look as you would like. Does the problem resolve?

Taking the .htaccess file out does not change the issue. I am considering re-building everything…can’t see any other way at this point.

I may check with hosting provider to see if there is anything that I’m missing.

The WordPress update to 4.4.2 did not change anything.

Well the other mechanism for redirects I thought was for the front end, but maybe worth a quick look – go to phpMyAdmin, wp_postmeta table and look for _wp_old_slug values. Delete any that look mischievious, or maybe all of them.
