• Hi,

Without any action n on my part,
my WP Admin has become inaccessible and,
some of my Home page is not loading

    https://www.PhotographyUncapped.com

Oddly, my content + internal pages seem mostly ok.

I was able to get in through FTP and delete a few plugins,
    upload recent versions of
    header
    footer
    style
    index
    functions
    wp-admin/index.php
with no impact on getting my Admin back.

By merely deleting some plugins, things are better but
I still can’t access my WP Admin at all.

    Any suggestions quite welcome.
    Thanks.

  • you can deactivate all plugins at once by renaming the /plugins folder

you have a lot of errors

    Thanks for the response,

I did rename plugins and created another empty one.
That did get me into the Admin.
I loaded my more known plugins, and this is working ok, but
I can’t get into Pages from the Admin,
Posts appear to be there but the Admin>Posts looks truncated,
Editor works but when licking on header it goes blank.

I do have several versions of edited Header files saved as Posts, but I can’t get to those thru Admin.

Is there another way to get to those?
or is there a better approach to fix my Admin, and get access to the ‘broken’ areas?

    Thanks again.

your entire home page loads for me
all post/draft info, etc. is stored in the database, so that shouldn’t affect your admin pages

maybe try re uploading the /wp-admin and /wp-includes` folders
this won’t hurt anything and if a file has been corrupted will take care of that

    (@ken-storch)

thanks for both of your swift responses.
    I’ll try that straight away.

    (@ken-storch)

    Alas,
    That didn’t completely resolve things.

Posts, while saying p.1 1-15 only shows only 5 of the posts, similar on other pages; p.2 16-30 shows 6 posts; p.3 31-45 shows only 3 posts.

Pages now shows the top graphic of the WP logo, my site name, my name, log out,
    but NOT |Turbo|
    and nothing else.

    Something is still hosed.

    What else might I try?
    Thanks.

try setting the /wp-admin folder to chmod 777 temporarily to see if it is a server permission issue

    Thread Starter Ken Storch

    (@ken-storch)

I know how to change to 777 on individual files,
but my FTP client (FireFTP in Firefox) doesn’t seem to offer this for Folders.

I also have DW CS4 which I use for put and get functions, if that can help.

It seems that as I try different things in Admin, some work and others are truncated or inaccessible.

For example, since I tried uploading my previous /wp-admin + /wp-includes folders my Dashboard has lost some of the usual features.

Pages are still inaccessible, as is Header from the Editor
    to cite a few.

    So,
should I try another way to change permissions on the wp-admin folder?
    try uploading older versions of /wp-admin + /wp-includes ?
    or something else?

Thanks so much for your help, things have improved with your help.

    use this ftp
    https://filezilla-project.org/download.php
    simple and works great

if that doesn’t get it working, I’ll help if I can – I would need your ftp user/pass and your blog user/pass
if comfortable doing that, email me
    srb333 at att dot net
just make that look like an email

filezilla allowed me to change the folder permission from 755 to 777
no change in Admin functions was apparent.

should i try uploading the earlier versions of the folders with permission set this way?

or just upload the folders with the previous 755?

    or…?

755 is what they should always be for security – I was just ruling out server permission issues
I’m really at a loss at what to do
    What was your previous version?

    hmmm.

by ‘previous version’ I meant of the admin + includes folders i had saved a week ago.

I actually had tried the upgrade possibility (mentioned in that post) earlier in this mess today, but it reported that no upgrade was necessary.

I guess I can try uploading the folders again, then, if that fails,
I can try doing the 2.9.1 install again?

Will that hose my content, pages, posts, comments etc?

(replying since samboll has left the building…)

No – the content for your posts, pages & comments is held in your database. So you can overwrite the files without worrying. Just stay clear of the wp-content folder and your wp-config.php file. The latter can be reconstructed if you do over-write it but who wants the extra hassle?

    Some more thoughts…

    – have you spoken to your hosting provider to see if they’ve changed anything on the server recently?
    – could you set up a new database and reinstall a fresh copy of WordPress in another folder on your site? I’d be curious to see if you have the same problems with a completely fresh install.

    – have you spoken to your hosting provider to see if they’ve changed anything on the server recently?

No, but they run an update blog and nothing is shown on that server.

    – could you set up a new database and reinstall a fresh copy of WordPress in another folder on your site? I’d be curious to see if you have the same problems with a completely fresh install.

Possibly, but I think I’ll try the 2.9.1 download and reinstall approach 1st.

I already tried samboll’s method of uploading a saved copy of my /wp-admin + /wp-includes folders.
Then I tried changing the method he suggested to change the /wp-admin folder permissions to 777.
Then I changed all the subfolders and file permissions, then changed them back to 755 when that didn’t work.

If I do the reinstall, do I need to do anything to exclude the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php from being changed?

Or can I just upload them from my previously saved copies on my HDD?

    Thanks for stepping in.

    Thread Starter Ken Storch

    (@ken-storch)

    additionally,

I just unpacked the 2.9.1 download.

Can I just upload some files/folders to my installation,

or should I act as if I’m doing a fresh install?

If I do the reinstall, do I need to do anything to exclude the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php from being changed?
Or can I just upload them from my previously saved copies on my HDD?

I’d just be careful when you’re uploading the new files.

It might be an idea to make a copy of your wp-config.php file somewhere safe on your local machine first. I don’t know how practical it would be to make a copy of your wp-content folder if you have a lot of images stored in there. But if that is feasible, then go ahead and make a copy. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
