I would backup and then upgrade.

I do not know the technical details for this release, but it is a security release, which is enough for me not to even ask questions. The upgrade for all of my sites went without a hitch.

Security releases are very important. It is easier to backup your site, install a security upgrade, and restore a backup if something goes wrong than it is to repair a hacked wordpress site! I learned that the hard way!

It should be highlighted as a link at the top of every Admin page at the moment. Otherwise go to Dashboard->Updates.

I don’t have dashboard -> updates. I am using 2.6.1 Do I have to do it manually?

Yes – you will have to upgrade manually initially in two stages from 2.6.1-> 2.7 -> 2.9. Then you can upgrade automatically to 3.0.4

Ensure that you deactivate all plugins, switch to the default theme and backup your database before you begin. Then backup the database again after each successful upgrade.

Thank you. You have been incredibly helpful. I am not sure I can be bothered doing all the updates, though and might just take the security risk for some time and then call it a day. What could a hacker realistically do?

Completely destroy your content, deface your site, lock you out and cause your domain to be blacklisted by Google. This is not a rare occurrence. We see this happening on an almost daily basis with sites that have not been kept up to date.

Not only that but by not updating WordPress when using a shared server, you may be placing every other site/domain on the server at risk. Your hosts may even have a clause in their Terms of Service that binds you to ensuring that all of your applications are kept up to date for their own protection.

Please do not dismiss the risks lightly.

How do I check what version of WP I’m currently running? I’ve looked everywhere, but can’t seem to find it. I know it’s a 2.xxx.

Hello All,

I have an issue with logging into my web site ever since I installed WP 3.0.4….I get a blank page when I type in the address https://www.yourmoneyanddebt.com/wp-admin

Has anyone had this issue before? I use Windows 7 on my IE computer. I’ve tried cracking into my web site on 2 different computers now, and get a blank screen or an HTTP 404 error both times.

Could I install the update using ‘installatron’?

wordpress is being targeted a lot by hackers to install code that will redirect visitors of an infected wordpress blog to another site (porn, fake anti-virus alert, etc..), usually the end result is your users may end up getting a virus, and your site will most likely get flagged as a source of malware/viruses. If that happens your traffic will drop significantly if you depend on google search results (since google will warn everyone to stay away from you blog until you fix it).

Also if you get hacked, you will spend ten times as long fixing it and making sure there are no backdoors left, then it would take you to do the update now.

bottom line: it’s definitely worth the (small) effort to upgrade. I manage a number of wordpress installs and know a bunch of other wordpress admin, we’ve seen an increasing number of wordpress installs hacked in the last 6 months.

It’s great that wordpress stays on top of updating, but I am getting concerned at the number of vulnerabilities and security updates. WordPress should put more effort in testing the software before it’s released or it will earn a reputation for being insecure.
