wp 2.6 permalinks error

ok I recently upraded to 2.6 and noticed that when i tried to follow the permalink of a post to the single page view i would get a 404 page.

I was using a custom permalink setting of /index.php/%day%/%postname%/

i changed it back to default and it works fine but for some reason i can not get any sort of custom structure to function?
