You should maybe create a loop in the sidebar to call this function.

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

Other example, I’m using <query> function in me sidebar and I do loop because files are separated

Do other functions work like is_front_page(), is_category(), is_single() etc?

Try using is_front_page() instead.
