• I have four separate installs on one virtual private server and have never had any problems for four years. I installed WP in Feb and now have a total of 4 blogs, each running a separate install of WP.

For the past 3 weeks, my server has been shut down because my host said it “reached the max MySQL open connections” for my account, which is something like 15 or so.

I do not have high traffic sites. Since it has only happened since installing WP (and only noticed since installing 2.5), are there some mysql calls that are not closed? Is anyone else experiencing this?

    Any solutions?

    Thanks.

  • any new plugins? – not all the SQL molestation happens in WP directly.

If you’re only running 4 WordPress blogs and they’re not crazy traffic volume I would think a decent VPS shouldn’t have trouble.

You could try the WP-cache plugin to see if that helps. It does a very good job of speeding WP up…almost as good as static HTML.

Other than that I would do some searching about your host…try to find out if other people are hitting this wall so quickly. If so it might be time to consider your hosting options.

If your blogs have heavy traffic it’s possible that it’s time to think about graduating to hosting with a bit more power.

I use wp-cache and have low traffic. The plugins I use include one one:
    AdSense Manager
    Akismet
    All in One SEO Pack
    cforms
    Google XML Sitemaps
    MightySearch
    Script Enabler
    SimplePie Plugin for WordPress
    Sociable
    wp-cache
    wp-forecast

Most others are similar to this:
    AdSense Manager
    Akismet
    All in One SEO Pack
    Amazon Showcase
    Google Analyticator
    Google XML Sitemaps
    MightySearch
    Script Enabler
    Sociable
    wp-cache

well, I don’t want to unduly besmirch any particular plugins, but there’s one there that stands out like a sore thumb, in terms of running its own SQL magic – and potentially lots of it, all over your database.

I’m speaking from a position of never having tried it, but if I were told that I have too many SQL connections I’d probably turn off my search plugin for a day or two.

I’m also inclined to agree with Adam here – if its not something really unusual going on, then perhaps you need to move on to a host which isn’t quite as tight with their oversales strategy.

    are you referring to mightysearch?

yes, when I said “search” I mean’t mightysearch. That’s where I’d start looking – not that I’ve used it myself

I disabled that on all sites and found one highly dynamic site that was had cache disable, so I enabled it. We’ll see.

    Thanks for your help!

I’m having a problem similar to this as well. My WP installation has been maxing out the SQL connections and putting them into a “Locked” state the Saturday before last. I’ve had to go in to the support chat for site5 every day for over a week to get them to unlock things.

It all began when I upgraded to WP 2.5.1.

I’m running the following plugins (with version numbers)

    Ad Rotator 1.0
    Akismet 2.1.4
    Comments Notifier 1.0
    Dashboard: Recent Posts Extended 1.0
    Diagnosis 1.2.1
    FeedBurner FeedSmith 2.3.1
    Google Analytics .60
    Diagnosis 1.2.1
    FeedBurner FeedSmith 2.3.1
    Google Analytics 0.60
Google XML Sitemaps 3.0.3.3 (set to rebuild the map when I change blog content)
    pjw-wp-phpmailer-nosender 1.5
    Related Posts 2.02
    Site Meter 1.01
    TanTanNoodles Simple Spam Filter 0.5
    Text Link Ads 3.1.0
    Woopra 1.1
    WordPress.com Stats 1.2.1
    wp-cache 2.1.2
    WP-DBManager 2.20

I also have a number of deactivated plugins.

It happens most commonly when I publish or edit a post. I did not add any new plugins at that time, though I have since added Diagnosis, WP-DBManager, and Woopra.

    My site is https://onthewingsblog.com/.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest that you perhaps have way to many plugins in general. You might want to go through your list and see what ones you really need.

I’m glad to hear I am not alone. I am using 2.5.1 as well and all this happened about the time I upgraded. Not so curious anymore. How do I put a potential bug ticket in?
