• I have been successfully running WP on my domain on 1and1 for years. Not too long ago they started offering a free SSL cert so I thought that would be a good addition and help secure my logins etc. It may be free in money but not in pain….

After a lot of screaming and hair pulling I have a cert installed. In my 1and1 control panel it shows it installed and activated on my domain. When running their website checker, it shows the domain has an SSL cert and it is functional. When running the SSL checker at https://www.ssllabs.com I get all “A”s.

When I change nothing and visit https://www.allans-stuff.com/ I get a messed up site. If I manually change the https://… to https://… under Settings->General->WordPress Address and Site Address, the site refuses to load.

I then thought about using the Really Simple SSL plugin and it says “No SSL was detected” and suggests that I check the SSL with https://www.ssllabs.com which of course I do and it passes. It also suggests I click a link to reload the page using SSL, this shows a scrambled page.

I am at a loss and could really use some help.

Use the plugin “better search and replace”.

Search for https://yourdomain.com and replace with https://yourdomain.com and that’s all that should be necessary. You do not need a plugin for ongoing SSL usage.

I can certainly try that but here is what scares me. When I change the two settings in wordpress from https://www.allans-stuff.com to https://www.allans-stuff.com the website becomes unavailable and the only way I can get back in is to open the phpadmin console on 1and1 and manually change the values in the options table.

If I do the search and replace, how can I go back if the website will not load after making the changes?

Backup the database first from phpmyadmin. Worst case is you can re-import it.

Is your 1and1 set to accept connections over SSL?

Backup and reimport I can do, thanks.

Set to accept SSL connections? I have no idea. I would assume that since they installed the SSL cert it would be. How can I check?
