• I saw that some encountered problems and I noticed there was a recommendation that you do a backup before installing. Knowing absolutely nothing about all of this techy stuff..I’m scared to install it. If I don’t install it, will it affect my blog negatively in the long run? Thank you.

  • Yes, the update is necessary for security and on-going functionality.

The backup recommendation has to do with the fact that the 3.6 update is going to make a modification to your database. So, making a backup beforehand leaves you with some fallback options just in case something might go wrong there. Overall, the backup you need there is your wp-content folder where your database will be modified.

I used to be skittish about updates, but no longer other than to do as you have done by reading the forums a bit to see what issues might be popping up for others…and like I believe wpYogi has said, this update is proving to be a very smooth one.

Disable ^all* plugins, and be sure to do that properly if you have a cache or security plugin that needs a bit of prior attention there. After that, switch to the Twenty Twelve theme and then do the update. It will not take long, and you will be shown what is going on. After the update has completed, re-activate your plugins and then your theme and give things a few sedonds to settle in and all should be well…but do not panic if something does not seem right. Rather, just come back here and one or more of these fine folks will walk you through whatever might need to be done.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but if I give you the user name and password to my blog, would you do it for me? I’m completely confused and have not one bit of tech savvy!

If the moderators do not complain and if you will allow me to help you for free, yes, I would either do that for you or at least watch while talking you through it on the phone. We cannot post any contact info here, but my sandbox site has a contact form and can be found in my profile.

Thank you so much, leejosepho..I sent you an email..let me know if you got it.

We really ask that people keep help here on the forums – partly because not everyone is well-intentioned – I know leejosepho is :).

And, Lismich – it’s really part of having a WP site to be able to maintain it. See if you can follow leejosepho’s help here, okay?

Do be sure that you make a backup of your site first – see:

Thank you, WPyogi. Outside of my lacking in all technical areas, I’ve been sick so my ability to concentrate and focus, much less sit up for long periods of time, is kind of null and void. That said..I subscribe to Vaultpress backup, so does that mean there is no need to make a backup since Vaultpress is constantly backing up my site?

Yes, if you know that VaultPress is working, that’s fine for backing up. Like leejosepho said, it really shouldn’t be too long or complicated in most cases.

But what theme are you using? It looks like a now-retired theme from WP.COM?

    (@lismich)

Yes..it is the Pool theme and I wanted to stay with Pool until I hire someone to redesign my site. Heck..I’m even clueless about switching themes and switching back to get this thing installed, hence why I was hoping to get someone with knowledge of all of this to do it for me. If I wasn’t sick..of course I’d give it a go ??

Do you know how old that theme is – or when did you move from WP.COM?

    Thread Starter Lismich

    (@lismich)

I moved at the beginning of last March. As far as I know..it’s as old as my blog (at least)..2008. The only theme I ever used.

I kinda worded that badly – I was wondering when it was last updated. WordPress.COM updates themes constantly to keep them compatible with WP Core, but as you can see in the link I posted above it’s been “retired.” Since you’re running 3.5.2 okay, it’s not that old and it may well be fine with 3.6, but hard to know for sure. What you may want to do is post over on WordPress.COM to see if any of the theme developers can tell you.

    (@lismich)

If it isn’t it’s ok since I was going to eventually change to twenty twelve anyway, but when I did a preview, my widgets were messed up…out of line, etc, with it, so I decided to just hold off until I was ready to redesign.

this mesage after upgrade, what can I do if I dont have a backup?

@just_adicu: As per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic.Posting in an existing topic prevents us from being able to track issues by topic. Added to which, your problem – despite any similarity in symptoms – is likely to be completely different.

I understand, I wrote this because I see others have the same problem in this topic and some people from here had the same problem and I dont know how to make to work the site from my work ??
