WorpPress Export & Import

  • I just set up a new site and want to copy some posts from an old one. I used the Export function under tools and it created an XML file which I saved. I then tried to import the file. My first attempt was to use the WordPress importer – seemed logical – but it says that I need to “Choose a WordPress WXR file to upload, then click Upload file and import”. but the file created by Export is not a WXR file. When I try to Import the XML file no posts are added to the site. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    I am using 3.0.3 on both sites.     You should be able to install a XML file for your posts. Did the site you’re importing to have the import function built in? There SHOULD have been a plugin you needed to install to do that, is what I’m driving at ??

    Ipstenu, Thanks for your help but please read my original post. I exported a file from one site and am attempting to import it to another. How do I import an xml file? I tried to use the WordPress importer but it did not work. You wrote, “You should be able to install a XML file for your posts.” That is the problem I am trying to solve. How do I do that – how do I import an XML file into the site? Chief

    There SHOULD have been a plugin you needed to install to do that

    Have you installed the importer tool plugin?

    moyajaya, I don’t know which plug-in you are referring to. As I said in my original post, I have tried the WordPress importer under tools but it does not import an XML file. The Exporter under tools creates an XML file but the Importer does not import it. The importer is looking for a WordPress WXR file. I have been trying to find a plug-in without success – can you recommend one? Chief

    moyajaya, I did try it – it works better when I got the plug-in installed but it does not seem to accurately copy the posts identified. I am making some progress though – thanks for your help.

    I have another way forward – can you suggest a way to add an XML request to a post? Is there a good plug-in or sample code for that?
