This is great as far as the Menu item selection goes. Is there anyway to get the same effect (ie open a page in a modal window) elsewhere without a shortcode e.g. on an image to show an information popup?

Alligator popup is similar to alligator menu popup, but will allow you to create a popup window from a shortcode or html link.

Alligator popup and alligator menu popup do not create modal pop-ups – the link opens in a new browser window.

OK, its the new window I am after. The alligator menu popup does exactly what I need from the menu, ie popup a separate window. WHat I am trying to do is to show the target of a url into a new window from a destination url on an image. I have tried various “shortcodes anywhere”, “shortcode in title”, and various popup plugins but none do from a link what alligator menu popup does from a menu.

Popups are so ubiquitous that I must be missing something obvious not being able to do this with external or internal urls

Alligator popup should work for your requirement. To use it on an image you can put the opening & closing shortcodes around the image. Alternatively you can use an html link which is outlined in the documentation.
