Excellent Plugin!

  • Edit: I’ve done some more benchmarking and found that the speed impact it has on the site is minor. Hence, changing my rating to 5* from my original rating of 4*.

    So far this is the best and the simplest lightbox plug-in I’ve found in WordPress repository and it works perfectly without doing any extra work or conflicting with anything. The best feature I like about this plug-in is that it can combine several galleries and show them together. Works out of the box.

    This plugin works perfectly but adds 10 assets to the page – not optimized for speed. I am looking for a lightweight alternative.

    Hi, as combining assets into single files was the recommended practice for a long time, it’s understandable to think it is still the best practice. However, SLB is built with modern technologies like HTTP/2 in mind, where multiple files are downloaded in parallel, resulting in faster page loads, not slower.

    Here are a few resources to get up to speed on these technologies and best-practices:

    There is indeed always more work to do, but SLB is built inside and out with performance in mind, from clean efficient code, to loading files in a way that makes the most of modern technologies to help your site load as quickly as possible.

    I’ve actually been doing a lot of benchmarking and speed tests for an upcoming update, so I would love to see any benchmarks you have that show SLB to be slow or heavy.

    First of all, thanks for making this great plugin, which is indeed the best lightbox plugin I’ve found so far, and for keeping it free!

    After another thorough benchmark, what I’ve found for a sample page is this:

    Without SLB: 3.9 MB page weight, 81 HTTP requests, 2.17 s load time (cached version) https://prntscr.com/okd80u

    With SLB: 4.0 MB page weight, 88 HTTP requests, 2.48 s load time (cached version) https://prntscr.com/okd9lw

    SLB is adding 100 KB page weight, 7 HTTP requests, and 310 ms load time, which I guess is acceptable compared to the other alternative solutions available. I’ll reconsider my rating to 4* and keep using it until I find something better than this.
