Working with Custom home.php and Pages Menu

I’ve pretty much always wanted to have a somewhat static homepage for my site, where there is a static HTML list of links and then a recent posts list running with the Loop. I managed to figure out how to get the page up and running without any errors, but as the article on tatic front pages suggests, I added a link to /wp-root/page/1
