Working File Manager or Photo Gallery without FTP?

I’m setting up WordPress for someone who really isn’t any sort of savvy. I wanted to set up a photo gallery for them, but all the ones I’m finding are either extensions for supplimentary software or require FTP uploads.

What I’d really like is a working upload manager for WordPress that could upload the photos via the web, and a photo gallery plugin that could use them. The latter is easy enough to find, but I’m having trouble with the former – unless there is a feature already in WP 2 that I simply haven’t found as I am a newbie to WP myself.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
