The problem started gradually. The export file would have a couple random extra items I didn’t ask for, like a bbpress forum thread or images belonging to none of the stories. I caught it adding an unwanted article as well but initially blamed myself.

The way I export is I assign a dozen articles to a user named “export” and then choose that user in the export form.

But the export files are now full of random stuff from other authors.

I have tried making a new user named export2, deleting “export” and then select to transfer export’s content to export2. I have also cleared caches just in case. Nothing works. I can no longer use this plugin to selectively export articles. Any ideas?

If I uncheck “Export media with selected content” I get a normal export file with the right items.

    Hi,

Do you, apart from the author, add any other filters to the export?

And is it possible to do a test with other plugins disable?

The plugin changes the database query on export and in some circumstances has to do so quite extensively.

I disabled all plugins and cleared cache. This reduced the export output from 518kb to 422kb. Still has some posts by authors other than “export2.”

I then installed and switched to the Twenty Twenty-Two theme and cleared cache in case the theme was doing something. Still the same 422kb.

The database is very old and could have some funk from use and abuse, but it all displays and edits correctly in WP with no noticable bugs.

I also updated a falsely included article with a new author in case that somehow “refreshes” it. It’s still included when I choose to export the “export2” user only.

I have an idea. I’m going to export the whole database to a fresh WordPress install and see if I can properly export from that.

I’ll report back with results later.

Strange, with all plugins disabled and only a filter on author I can’t really see how the plugin should include other items than the original posts + attachments.

Those attachments, off-course, can be from other authors! Only the posts itself are filtered by the author-filter.

So: if user ‘export2’ has a post that includes an attachment of ‘other-user’, then in the export will be the posts of ‘export2’ and the attachment of ‘other-user’.

The import on a fresh install gave lots of errors about wrong post types, so the export file definitely contains some weird stuff that isn’t the attachment type. The DB is a decade old and has seen some battles, so the issue is probably too esoteric to be worth looking into.

I’ve figured out a way to migrate with normal export now. Thank you for your time.
