WordPress.com stats and Quantserve

  • Does WordPress.com Stats plugin use, or interface with Quantcast servers or their technology? I saw a js segment loading from a quantserve.com server in the source view. Does that interfere with a Quantserve script that I may insert from my own account? Should users have more information about this?

    I should have searched a little harder to find Matt’s confirmation that it is indeed an undisclosed use of Quantcast script for some unknown future benefit. Too much of a speed penalty, off goes the WP Stats.

    Trust is gained slowly but lost very quickly. Be careful, caveat venditor

    Equally relevant and deserving of an answer: is this Quantcast script included in the JetPack Stats component?

    I believe it is. I tried JetPack and was able to trace Quantcast in it. Although parts of JetPack can be activated at will, I did not see much need for its components and removed it. Installing was a bit difficult and I had to edit a line of code based on a forum post; that made it work.

    Well, I’ve blocked Quantserve from loading on my site. I’m not very happy to find out that I’ve been serving third-party tracking cookies to my site visitors against my knowledge and will.

    Perhaps a short note on the process of blocking Quantserve from any site could be helpful to many. Short of banning their IP using a plugin, “Ban IP”, I am not of much help.

    Thanks, very good to know. I will update my post with a link here and one to the plugin. Appreciate the help.

    I was extremely dismayed to find that this plug-in had associations with quantserve – Even as they are now declared on the plug-in page it is easy for someone not paying attention to not realize the consequences of this. I was lured into a sense of security by it’s association with wordpress.com.

    Which is also why I wanted to share acekin’s comment on his blog that he is now using SlimStats and ShortStats, as alternatives that I trust are not associated with any commercial data mining company.
