I’m having trouble importing a previous wordpress.com blog to my current wordpress blog. The xml file is imported as a .txt file and showing up in the media library. What am I doing wrong? My current site is siencollective.com. My previous site was endlesswell.wordpress.com. I exported the blog, then changed the domain name and now would like to import the previous blog posts. Any thoughts?

    Hi,

If it’s adding the file to the media library, I believe you are in the wrong section of your WordPress install.

To import the file, you should go to Tools > Import and pick the bottom option for WordPress, you’ll then be prompted to install a plugin (the importer is a plugin). once it’s installed it will have it’s own page for you to upload the .xml file into.

Hmmm. I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ve been doing although I have never seen a prompt for a plugin. These are the steps I’ve taken – Admin>Tools>Import> then I’m prompted to browse and upload. I choose the .xml file and upload. I keep getting a successful import message from WordPress. But either the file shows up in the media browser or not at all. Is it supposed to show up as a page?

Under the Import page, are you picking the WordPress option before uploading the file?

After uploading it, you should generally be prompted to choose what to do with the authors for the imported posts.

Yes, that is exactly what’s happening. I am picking the WordPress option, then I’m prompted for authors, I choose them, and submit. I believe I exported the file from the same domain name that I am importing into. Could that be the problem?

Hmm, this is a bit of a longshot, but do you have any other plugins enabled at this time, if you do could you try disabling them all (except the importer one) and see if it works then?

If that doesn’t help, how many posts does your import contain, and did you have a lot of media elements uploaded on the site previously?

I don’t have any other plugins. Just using the online version of wp. I probably have about 20 posts on the blog with multiple images and links.

Endlesswell, how many posts, categories, tags, images, and other items are you trying to import into the new installation of WordPress? In other words, what is the filesize of the XML file?

My XML is only 356k – pretty small considering I have a number of images (?) – probably around 15-20. There are around 50 posts. I’m not worried about losing the images, I have most of them in my media library. I just want to restore the text and links.

And you checked your posts/pages to see if it imported? Where they originally part of another type of post or page (some people have posts, pages, portfolio, or any other different “post types”)?

That .txt file in the media section is generated when you begin importing. WordPress uploads the file, saves it in the media section and stores the attachment ID so that it can easily delete the xml file once the import is complete. What’s happening is the import isn’t reaching the final step where it deletes that attachment. Sometimes that can happen when you’re uploading a large XML file or it can happen if something prevents it from finishing.

Also, just to clarify, you’re moving from a WordPress.com site to a WordPress site that’s being hosted somewhere else, not from one WordPress.com site to another WordPress.com site, correct?

If your new blog is still hosted on WordPress.com, you should reach out to support here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/ . WordPress.com and www.remarpro.com are different flavors of the same WordPress, but still different enough that WordPress.com support would be able to help you a lot easier.

Actually I am moving from one wordpress.com site to another wordpress.com site. Actually – it’s the same site with a new domain name and design. I tried support through wordpress.com and ended up here. So I’m feeling a little lost. Don’t know who to contact for help!

You need to be on WordPress.COM if that’s where your sites are. If you got told otherwise, it was a mistake :)!

OK – I’ve finally figured out how to post my problem to wordpress.com! Thanks for your help, everyone.

It’s rough to get pushed back and forth. Not trying to pass the buck, just get you the best support! Glad to see you figured it out.
