• I’m running into a occasional problem where the customer’s site goes off-line and when I research it, the wp-config.php file has zero bytes in it. I normally set this file to a permission of 644. But, to stop the problem, I’m restoring the file and changing the permissions to 444. The problem with this is I have some security plugins that may need to make changes to this file (i.e. Sucuri Security and iThemes Security). I suppose it’s possible one of these could be contributing to the problem. But, I first wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with this problem and found a solution. I’d really prefer to not have to change permissions on over 100 sites and have our security not be able to keep the files updated.

What’s in common with the sites that have this issue? Same hosting account? If so, change the FTP and hosting passwords. If it’s just one site, treat that site as hacked. In addition to the above, get a fresh cup of coffee, take a deep breath and carefully follow this guide. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.

If you’re unable to clean your site(s) successfully, there are reputable organizations that can clean your sites for you. Sucuri and Wordfence are a couple.
