• Alright now this one here is a doozy.

    We have 2 wordpress websites
    1: crocusrealty.com
    2: portagelibrary.com

Website #1 loads super slow, (how-ever only in the am) between 2-4 it seems like it speeds up and has no issues until the next morning

Website #2 has no issues loading what so ever at any point of time in the day (same server as #1, same version as #1)

at first we thought it could be a server issue, but if thats the case, shouldn’t we see the slowdown on the other websites hosted by this server, but we don’t.

Then I thought (still somewhat do..) it has to be script related, but that doesn’t explain it speeding up later in the day.

Any ideas on things we could try to troubleshoot this issue?

I do have full shell access to the server as well as physical access to the server. so anything you can think of I am able to do.

Server info (php ver, sql and all that good stuff can be seen here

  • Have you spoken to your hosts about this?

    We are the host.

The server belongs to SolutionsIT, hence why I have full shell access & physical access to the server.

It sounds to me like another site placing a drain on the server’s resources during this time period. Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Fourteen theme with all plugins deactivated?

Nope, we actively monitor our server

    load is nice and low

but again, if that where somehow the case, if I load both website at the EXACT same time in the morning the crocusrealty one always loads slower.

I do have the queries & render time displayed on both websites as well.

CR has a way lower amount of Queries but more then double the render time.
Library has way more queries (almost 300% more!!) but loads twice as fast.

Have you tried checking your site’s error logs for clues?

    Yup,
    2 errors pop up

    GET /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=wpp_js_localization&ver=1.38.3.2 HTTP/1.1″ 200 1178

    GET /wp-content/themes/denali/fonts/ubuntu-regular.eot? HTTP/1.1″ 304

Errors? They look like normal lines from an access.log. Even the 304 code just indicates that the resource hasn’t changed since it was last accessed (or cached).

Have you checked for slow running plugins?

Sorry I read the e-mail incorrectly from a co-worker, yes they are from the access.log

    his e-mail reads

    Hi Sean,
    This one is goofy, eh?
    Nothing is showing up in the error_log which means nothing is broken is as far as the server is concerned. When I watch the access_log this comes up;

When I click on a page under https://www.crocusrealty.com this comes up immediately:
    https://www.crocusrealty.com 205.***.255.*** – – [10/Dec/2013:11:02:23 -0600] “GET /map-search/ HTTP/1.1” 304 – “https://www.crocusrealty.com/open-houses/” “Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/5.0)”

The after 10 seconds or so this pops up in the log all at once while the page is appearing:

    https://www.crocusrealty.com 205.***.255.*** – – [10/Dec/2013:11:02:23 -0600] “GET /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=wpp_js_localization&ver=1.38.3.2 HTTP/1.1” 200 1178 “https://www.crocusrealty.com/map-search/” “Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/5.0)”

    https://www.crocusrealty.com 205.***.255.*** – – [10/Dec/2013:11:02:34 -0600] “GET /wp-content/themes/denali/fonts/ubuntu-regular.eot? HTTP/1.1” 304 – “https://www.crocusrealty.com/map-search/” “Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/5.0)”

All of the lines mentioned above have the same IP address. Has anyone looked into whether someone (or something) is hammering the site at these times?

    Thread Starter SolutionsIT

    (@solutionsit)

    That IP address our offices.

I’ve just scanned your site for malware and got a warning that the site needed updating. That site is only using WordPress 3.6.1? Why are you using an old copy of WordPress? Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being hacked? You need to upgrade WordPress asap.

Son of a gun, I was not.

I would have assumed the Developer of this website was running the latest version, I shall have him update that and see if that helps.

    Thanks Esmi!

Website has been updated, same issue
website has been moved to https://crocusrealty.wpengine.com/
    speed issue is now gone

so now it may be server related,
but I’m still left wondering, if it is our server why is it only their website that is slow.. hmmm, anyone have an idea I could try?
