• I’m a newbie on WordPress. I can use it, but installation issues I have no idea how to resolve. Here are the specifics:

I am using GoDaddy for my hosting service. I have saved my databases from my original sites (I will have 2 to install eventually on the same hosting account. Right now, I’m trying to get just the main one up)

Per GoDaddy, I have had to install & uninstall WP 4 times now due to installation errors. I have installed WP once again. Once complete, I “restored” my database (that I had backed up). What I get on my site is a blank white screen. No error messages, just a little “done” in the lower left corner. GoDaddy will help no further as they don’t “support” WP. I’m at a loss on how to ask for help because I don’t know enough to tell you what is wrong.

    Who out there can help?

    Marian

    Update:

Text is now appearing. Moved files under WordPress into like named folders in wp-content

All formatting is gone. Site address is MarianMadonia.com

    Howdy Marian,

I know Go Daddy Linux hosting quite well, having successfully installed literally 100’s of Joomla! sites (same requirements as WP) and a number of WP ones, and the very FIRST thing I ask is:

What TYPE of hosting plan do you have? Linux or Windows? Sure hope it’s Linux otherwise my NEXT recommendation is ALWAYS to have them switch it over for you ?? They will do so at no charge (have had clients inadvertently do this when they purchased the hosting … sort of a “deer in the headlights” thing – they see “Windows” as an option, don’t know diddly about Linux, so go with that). In the WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal worlds, to paraphrase Coca-Cola, “things go better with Linux” ??

Then the next question is: did you use the GD one-click install or do it yourself (sounds like the latter, which is the better, IMHO).

When doing so, it depends on a number of factors as to how it’s done and what type of hosting plan you have. I could go on and on, but what I hear back will determine on how to proceed.

It really is quite easy (if you’ve done it enough times ?? )… I put up new WP 3.0 site the other day … 5 minutes, tops!

    Cheers!

    Marian,

Looks like all is well now. Did it have to do with the file location? Sometimes when the index file is looking in the wrong place for content it causes a blank screen. Let us know how you fixed it.

    Lyle and Alicia,

Thanks for responding. I never resolved the above problem (and am on to the next one). I was able to recover my text from the original site, so I rebuilt it from scratch. It wasn’t too detailed yet, I was just building it. It took less time than the jammering around I was doing trying to make the upload work.

Now I have a second site. I was on HostGator and moved it to Godaddy where I’d paid for many services on my main site for 5 years and didn’t want to pay for 2 copies of (shopping cart etc).

I’ve got the basics done. Now I need to “import” the old database. I found one site that told me I’d have a problem if the User names & passwords were different from old site to new, so I added the user name & password. I’m pretty good with internet research and finding instructions, but I’m at a standstill now.

The site from Hostgator downloaded as a zip file. The zip isn’t recognized if I use PHPAdmin to upload. I tried going in through my file manager, but it “archived” the files. If I unzip, it gives me HUNDREDS of files that I’d have to download. That can’t possibly be right. Am I going to have to rebuild this one from scratch too?

    All help/insight is appreciated.
