After a problem with a plugin I was advised by my Host that it would suit my site concept much better if I were to use a full width screen for most of my pages. So I did that, and, being afraid of creating the Child Theme, I used the Appearance/Editor, and the result looked good. Instead of using a custom sidebar on these pages I used a plugin to create columns – great! I also increased the site of my site title – again success. But I realised that come another upgrade, I would lose it all, and understood that the only answer was to create a Twenty Fourteen Child Theme. I attempted to do so, through Child Theme Configurator. Sadly this went wrong despite their team’s efforts to correct it – they thought it might be a problem of another plugin!

In the middle of recovering my files to a previous day, I was alarmed by a message from WordPress to say that a new upgrade was in process – 4.0.1 – strange, I thought, wasn’t my site on 4.1.1? But being obedient, I thought I had better obey, and anyway didn’t seem to have a choice. So I pressed OK and woosh! My site was again all over the place! And I had just put up a page in Facebook and told all my friends about it!

Is a Child Page theme really a solution for me – or can I switch to another theme altogether, one which supports wide pages, 2 columns, a custom sidebar
    and a larger site-title font?

I’d be grateful, yet again, for your suggestions

Sure, you can switch to any theme you like :)! Whether you will find one that has exactly what you want is another question though.

But with any theme, don’t modify theme files – as you found out, that’s not a good way to go. So either make a child theme or if you are only making CSS changes, you can use custom CSS (some themes have an option to add custom CSS or you can use a plugin for custom CSS).

BTW, your site seems to be working now?
