• I have been asked to take over an existing site but it is running version 3. If I upgrade will I break the site. It uses a lot of widgets and a custom education theme and genesis framework.

  • Hi,

It’s very likely that something might break after upgrade since you are many versions behind and using a custom theme.

I suggest you to setup a localhost on your computer and clone your whole online site onto your computer.

Do the upgrade on your computer, so that you can fix any issues that you encounter.

List down all issues and fixes, so that you can apply them on your online site after making updates.

    Thank you

I am new to WordPress. How do I setup a localhost? Sounds like a good idea as I have two WordPress websites and don’t like the way any changes are live. Can I setup multiple sites on a local host.

    Hi,

You can use MAMP for Mac or MAMP for windows. Both have a free version.
    https://www.mamp.info/en/

This desktop application will let you setup a server environment on your computer. Which is what we call localhost.

You can refer to this article for more details.

I set up mamp for windows but I start mamp but I can’t figure out how to add a project. It all new to me. I tried first Wampserver32 and 64 but they came back with an error when starting the program. All very new to me.

    Hi,

I know it’s difficult for starters, but the only way to learn is to read up from articles and try it out yourself.

It’s the same usage for MAMP windows and MAMP Mac.
    https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-install-wordpress-locally-on-mac-using-mamp/

    After installing MAMP.
You find your application folder, go inside it and find htdocs folder.
Download WordPress and unzip into htdoc folder, you will have htdocs/wordpress/

    Setup your mysql database.

Start up MAMP server and navigate to localhost/wordpress for installation.

There is a forum on localhost installs. You can do research if you encounter any issue.

I downloaded WordPress and put it is htdocs.
But I am confused how to set up my mysql database. Sorry for being so dumb.
Do I need the pro version for more than on domain site?

You’re not being dumb, this stuff is generally hard.

Can you let us know the website that you’ve inherited? When you ask if you need the pro version, it makes me think you’ve inherited a WordPress.COM site instead of a self-hosted one.

I am looking at abbotsfordlions.com which has a broken link for contact us on the first page. But I can’t find it. It seems to have widget starting it, very confusing.
    But I also have missioneasysoftware.ca and missioneasysoftware.com
I would like to setup a html5 site with no WordPress.
I start my servers I think and I get https://localhost:8888/MAMP/ but I tried https://localhost:8888/MAMP/htdocs/wordpress but I get file not found. I also tried https://localhost:8888/MAMP/wordpress. I also copied menu.htm to c:/mamp and c:/mamp/htdocs but I get file not found.
Not sure where my root is .

I tried https://localhost:8888/menu.htm and it is in c:/mamp/htdocs so guess htdocs is my root folder. i type wordpress I getted ask for English install then It wants
    Database name
    Database username
    Database password
    Database host
Table prefix (if you want to run more than one WordPress in a single database)
I don’t know what to answer to so I wait for your reply.

I add a host to pro. htmlplay set root to c:/mamp/htdocs/htmlplay but when I start the server I still have to use htdocs/htmlplay/menu.htm I thought the root would be htmlplay so I would access just menu.htm

I am confused. All my htdocs and subfolders are flagged read only. I try changing them but it doesn’t stick. I now get permission errors trying to access files. I am shooting in the dark here.

I watched a mac video on install and these are the values they used.
What am I doing wrong? I followed each step including creating a wordpress database

    Database name wordpress
    Database username root
    Database password root
    Database host localhost
Table prefix (if you want to run more than one WordPress in a single database)
