WordPress Upgrade

  • From what planet do the WordPress folk think their users come. We are not all tech-geeks. We follow blindly your instruction but in the end, most of us have not the faintest idea of what we are doing.

    I am not an idiot, I have even managed to master HTML and design websites in my time but upgrading from one version of the code to a new version is too much for me as a simple user. For the life of me, I cannot think why the folk at WordPress cannot build simple upgrading code into their upgrades. If the upgrade from 2.1.2 to 2.1.3 is so desperately urgent. if you cannot give us a one stop operation to upgrade just tell us exactly which files to replace and not give us a whole days headache of backing-up, upload, download, replacing and goodness knows what else! Get a grip…

  • I may be a sheep and doing all things wrong, but it took me 5 minutes to execute a flawless upgrade….

    Database backup, file backup, disable plugins, extract files and overwrite old ones, upgrade, re-enable plugins… done !

    Not sure where the nightmare is….

    My WordPress blog has only been loaded for one week and I am still trying to make it useable for my site users. I haven’t even cracked the side-bar yet let alone added some of the features I need for it to match the capabilities of the old HTML site. So an un-necessarily complicated upgrade is totally unwelcome.

    I am glad to see that I managed to identify WordPress’s second biggest problem within a week of becoming a user…

    That would sound like a fair statement coming from a paying customer ??

    a) Upgrade all the WordPress files, unless you have modified them in some special way.
    b) Backing up and upgrading the files should take no more than 20 minutes, even for an inexperienced user.
    c) There’s no database changes with this one, so a 2.1.2 to 2.1.3 upgrade is significantly simpler than most upgrades.

    This isn’t a matter of being a tech geek. It’s mainly a matter of using an FTP client. You don’t *have* to have a backup, mind you. 99% of the time it’ll work. But it’s probably a good idea to have one anyway.

    As far as making it simpler, that’s more prone to failure because not all setups are the same. Everybody’s web host is different. There’s no one way to do it.
