• Over the last few weeks I have been working on a site that will concentrate on WordPress themes for Educational Use. WordPress is such as dynamic and brilliant platform for web publishing that it could easily be used in order to publish websites for educational establishments around the world. What I am hoping to do is to create a set of themes that will enable people to do this easier.

So why am I telling you this? Well I would love your opinions on what sort of features you would like to see in WordPress themes for education.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

P.S. check out Education Themes at educationthemes.co.uk

  • This is a very broad subject – broad to the point that I am not sure even what you mean. I think most themes could be use for a site that has an education related purpose but it really depends what the purpose of the site is.

Will it have lessons? Then the theme should have, perhaps in the sidebar, a link to all lessons.

Will it display related news? Then news categories and comments would be helpful.

Advice for other teachers (or students?) then a contact form to ask advice.

A zine-type could have article displayed prominently, author profiles, an easy way to submit content and a link for potential ‘staff’ to register.

An official website might require an official logo or header but..

These are just stabs in the dark. “Themes for education” doesn’t give me any sort of clue what types of sites would use them therefore I don’t know what would make my experience best.

This is a really broad subject and therefore I just wanted to get some ideas of things that maybe I have not thought about in terms of design and functionality.

Is there anything that would need to be included that I haven’t thought about?

Yes there would be pages for different lessons but that would really be for the author of the specific site to complete rather than the site design.

Certainly a contact form would help and will be included. I like the idea of author profiles too which is a really good idea (thans ladycrow) as there may be many contributors to the website.

Any more ideas from anyone then keep them coming, please.

Sadly at this time of writing the site is down.

Some advice, if it for edu I think its best if your themes is section 508 & WCAG AA compliant. I haven’t seen any wordpress themes than can reach that level yet.

I haven’t seen any wordpress themes than can reach that level yet.

A lot of themes are, theyre just not public. ??

My last iteration was completely complaint despite having tons of fluff. :0

certain countries required section 508. I really think there should be at least one at WP official theme site.

Sorry what is section 508? I am not with you here being from the UK…

the UK is actually one of the countries that has special ‘requirements’ for certain business sites…(arguably)

section 508 is a purely American standard for web accessibility. (to correct my mispeak above)

So I guess what you are all saying is that accessibility to the website is an important factor for education themes that are created. I agree.

There may be pupils and students with speical educational needs that will be using them.

Any more ideas? please keep them coming…

I have been trying to find a plugin that will allow commenters to upload files which would mean that pupils can upload their work to teacher but I am not having much success. Anyone any ideas on this one?
