WordPress, SQL, Yahoo…crash

    Generally speaking I think myself fairly computer literate. I have maintained several wordpress blogs — at more than one url. But something ugly happened, and I am not sure what.

    I had (note, sadly, the past tense) a blog at https://mejones.net — it lived there for almost 2yrs. I decided to install a second, less personal, blog (I’m a writer & it was my intention to publish short nonfiction essays and stories on this second blog). So, I used Yahoo’s for dummies install of wordpress. No worries, except it asked to be upgraded…I did that…learned all about SQL, or so I thought.

    Somehow between yesterday and today…I have irrevocably destroyed my SQL database. I, in frustration, and without much forethought deleted everything on the site. Now, I get a pesky message from the sql admin log in…#2013 – Lost connection to MySQL server during query If I try to create a new user ID I get the following error: The system is either busy or unavailable. Please try again later.

    Meanwhile, whether I do the yahoo-for-dummies install, or an FTP upload, I cannot open the wordpress admin panel and I simply get a screen that says: Error: cannot connect to database when I load the blog (now deleted) itself…

    HOW do I fix this?

  • Contact Yahoo and request for SQL backup from last week if they have it. When did you last back up SQL or XML and files in webhost? Worst case scenario, hope that Google cached your pages and that you can retrieve website info from there.

    I have a back up that I did from WITHIN the sql admin panel — last night — but I don’t know what to do with it.

    How would I get cached pages from google — and how would I restore the database using them?

    You do not restore database using the cached pages, you can certainly try to recreate posts in WP Admin manually. Like I said, worst case scenario where everything is toast – no SQL, XML or file backups.

    Before this calamity happened, you wrote that you had installed a second blog. Questions: did you install second blog in same database? Did you make the table prefix in your second blog DIFFERENT oR SAME as the table prefix of your first blog? Did you make the SQL backup BEFORE or AFTER the calamity?

    I installed into the same database — and both blogs worked late last night. This morning I ftp-ed the upgrade (being careful to set the parameters in the config file)

    Backed up BEFORE I can SEE the back up — and I click on the restore back up…but nothing happens.

    More than recovering what I have lost, I am interested in creating the new blog — which I am unable to do. I cannot install a new blog.

    [resolved] Sort of, I guess. Yahoo has stripped & reset my site — now I just need to ftp the latest wordpress.

    I have copied the existing wp-config from the site to my hard drive and will ftp that as well — that’s the way I should do it, right?
