We run a local news site, [www.dailybulldog.com], using WordPress. For the past year and a half we’ve never had any significant problems of any kind.

On Dec. 1 at roughly noon, the site began running very slowly, both when using the dashboard to manage content and for visitors looking at the site (although the issue appears more pronounced in the dashboard).

Our server provider (Bluehost) insists there is nothing wrong with the server, and says the file index.php is what’s causing the slow down. We run version 2.5.1 (our theme Mimbo 2.2 was designed by a private company and we’d rather not lose it if possible, we’re a news site and maintaining a consistent template is extremely important).

I have reviewed other posts on this forum and elsewhere to find a solution. I’ve checked plugins, scripts and the like and haven’t seen anything that could cause this issue.

My question therefore is this: what could be causing the slowdown and how can we fix it?

    We run version 2.5.1

That version is way out of date and insecure. It is not up to par with the functionality or security of the day. The first thing I would suggest would be to go about upgrading step by step to WordPress 3.0.2 and then, if necessary, customizing your theme to work along with it or else get a new theme.

Using a caching plugin and removing or upgrading existing plugins is also likely going to be needed.

I checked your site. It does seem top have a caching problem. However even without a caching plugin your site should not be that slow. The cache problem might well be with your hoster. I abandoned Bluehost for hosting my blogs for exactly that reason: slow site.

If your theme was well designed it should survive the upgrade.

Thanks for the replies. We’re looking into getting wordpress (and possibly the theme) updated.

The suddenness of the slowdown is the weird thing, it’s as if a switch had been thrown somewhere.
