Yesterday I upgraded one of my sites https://www.maurovalli.com to version 3.7.1 (from 3.6.x) manually via FTP.

Now all that shows is a blank screen, regardless of browser or incoming IP address. It is not possible to reach the WordPress login screen or dashboard at all.

Interestingly, there is now an .ftpquota file in the top directory of the site which I cannot delete via FTP: could it have been put there by WordPress? If so, what username and password combination can I use to log in to the server so that I can delete it? Our ISP thinks that could be the problem. I still have access to the WordPress database, by the way.

BTW, I tried all the techniques listed in the various forum entries here, such as renaming plugin directories etc.

    Please help!

    Have you tried:
    – To rule out any theme-specific issue, try switching to the unedited default, core-bundled Theme (such as Twenty Twelve or Twenty Thirteen) for a moment using the WP dashboard. If you don’t have access to your admin area, you can switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides. Alternately, you can remove other themes except the default theme. That will force your site to use it.

    – If that fails to resolve the issue, try manually re-uploading all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first!
Always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case.

I did all the various things suggested and eventually got my site working. There is a problem with the theme which I will now look into.

    Many thanks for the help.
