• My site https://www.top10films.co.uk has been running slower than usual over the last few days. Sometimes it loads fine, but frequently the site will hang for several seconds before loading in pieces.

I have contacted my web provider to ask if it is a problem with their sever. They say everthing is running fine and that the cause is to do with WordPress not updating correctly when I auto-updated to WordPress 3.0.1. But the auto-update said everything was updated correctly.

Now, however, if I try to reinstall through auto-update it doesn’t work – nothing happens, it just hangs. Same with plugins – if I deactivate or activate the screen will go blank – if I use my browser back button and refresh the page it shows that the action has been initialized okay but it’s obvious there’s a problem there.

My site has seen a 50 per cent drop in traffic over the last two days with the problems with the site. I have optimized database, installed hyper-cache, used Mozilla Firebug to check if any file in particular is causing the problem but I can’t seem to solve it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Also be sure it’s not your local connection or local network, too. Try the site on other PCs at other locations.

…Yeah, I’ve tried it at home and at work and have asked friends to see how it runs on their computers – the answer is slow! ??

…but thanks again for your help. I chose a very cheap web host (as I wasn’t quite sure how much the site would grow) and have had no problems for over a year. But now I’m guessing I’m getting what I paid for. I won’t be recommending one.com.

[SOLVED] After passing the buck my host finally revealed it was a problem at their end. Thanks to everyone who helped. I would steer clear of the host I use, especially for WordPress sites. Had no problems for over a year but they were adamant it was a problem at my end when it turns out all along it was a problem at theirs. Site is now running fine.

    Howdy Chief,

Did your host say what sort of problem it was? I’m having the same issue occasionally – on Shared Server at MediaTemple – and it’d be great to have some example of what to ask about. Especially since the host will most likely assume it’s a problem with the site code.

    Thanks!

Sorry Johnny, they didn’t go into specifics.

The problem was fixed after the host sent an email to all customers explaining they had recently been making major changes to improve the service for all customers.

They only mentioned a series of optimizations to make their shared servers faster. No specifics.

Every shared server host is going to be a bit different, and Media Temple is the same. Ask them, and consider the amount of traffic your site gets, esp. if it’s an occasional slowdown.

I’m having the same issues with one.com and my wordpress install.

They keep feeding me the “we’re having techn. issues, our technicians are looking into it”.

They’ve been feeding that to me since I got the hosting (few weeks ago). I’m having the same issues, their servers are just slow as hell to respond. Can take over 60 seconds the first time, the other time 2 seconds. Then 2 minutes later I’m getting blank pages.

I’m the only visitor on the site, so maybe 100 pageviews a day.

    Avoid that host.
