WordPress running slow – both site and admin

have you tried:

-clearing cache in your browser before viewing the updated page? to clear cache in your browser, press clrl+f5 keys simultaneously.

-deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to narrow down and possibly fix the problem . If the problem goes away, activate them individually to find the culprit?

If you don’t have access to your admin area, try deactivating them manually via FTP or phpMyAdmin.

-switching to the default theme (Twenty Ten) for a moment by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes. The idea is to force WordPress to fall back to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific issue?

If you don’t have access to your admin area, then access your server via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

-If the above steps do not resolve the issue, Download WordPress again and replace your copies of everything EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies. This should replace your core files without changing your content and settings in wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory.

Note that some uploaders may not overwrite files reliably, so delete the original files before replacing them.

-if that does not resolve the issue, try increasing memory available for php.

-using caching plugin?

– I switched to the default theme and again it was still running slowly.

-using caching plugin? – yep – I’m using a cache plugin and there’s no change.

The problem is on the site and in the admin area. Both run slowly. The public site usually stalls when accessing a page then suddenly loads. The admin invariably runs sluggishly.

Really needs to solve this. Is there any way of fully ruling out a server problem if your host has said everything is fine?

I noticed in through ftp access that in my files there are teh copies of wordpress that have been updated through automatic update. Version 2.6 was the first version I had with subsequent updates revealing files that are 0 bytes. So they have been automatically deleted.

However, version 3 still has all its files as does the new version and version 3.1 – should version 3 have been deleted?

Is there any information I can provide so maybe someone could help me get to the root of this problem.

Is your host Godaddy? Because my site/admin was always slow when I used them.

No, I’m using one.com.

I still haven’t managed to figure it out yet. The Counterize counter is saying hits are back up to the levels they were before it started running painfully slowly but for me the site is still sluggish.

One.com may have just decided to throttle you back. Might be time for a better server.

I am using. FATCOW.com to host https://www.wickedbots.com/membership
I also experience some lag at intermittent times. I have 4 wordpress installs and non that are currently “known to the world” meaning noone but me post. My installs are new with the exception of my main which Uses Plugin(S2member) and Theme(Pixel). I believe all Fatcow accounts are shared hosting. NOTE: For those that visit my site/wordpress. it is still under construction and i know of the spacing issues and lack of content.

It is a shared server. I was thinking it might be a hosting problem – the site has been getting between 3000 and 4000 hits page views per day – averaging around 70,000 hits per month (95,000 last month).

I did use a plugin to delete page revisions – that didn’t seem to help.

@chiefbrody2001: does sound like it’s time for better hosting. Shared server means you’re sharing the webserver and database server with hundreds or sometimes thousands of other sites, depending on how badly one.com oversells. You could stay there and go with a CDN for images and static files, but it’s probably best to get a VPS.

…I have added the Total Cache plugin today and haven’t noticed a benefit. If the browser is constantly saying “Waiting for https://www.top10films.co.uk” does that point to a slow server. Once the page actually begins to loads it generally loads fast. The problem seems to be that initial request – it frequently takes 30 seconds to begin loading the page.

Having completed most of the above steps the site is still running very slowly.

The site is now also, at times, hanging for a while then going to a blank screen in both admin and public pages.

Still a host problem, though the site loads faster for me now. Could be slow DNS lookups and the host getting bottlenecked from time to time. Blank pages means the host is dropping out completely, if it’s not a plugin problem. Find a new host.

Thank you songdogtech. That’s what I need really – reassurance that it is the host and not the site build.
