WordPress reverted on its own

  • I just noticed that my wordpress site reverted to an older version. I updated my site about 2 weeks ago so something must have happened between then and now.

    I’m perplexed about how this happened since I am the only one who has access to the site and backend database. I called my hosting company and they don’t have a clue what happened. There were no database or maintenance changes that happened on their end.

    Even the jetpack statistics page shows that I had published a blog post two weeks ago but the post or other updated pages are nowhere to be found!

    Is there a resolution to this other than starting all over again?

  • Unless you used a Downgrade plugin, WordPress would have not done that. This sounds like a site restore was performed using an old backup.

    Can your hosting provider give you access to your site’s server logs? That would literally tell you everything that happened on your site (for the period logged). Also are you using any backup plugins that can automatically make backups and save them off-site? Potentially something triggered it to roll-back to a previous backup?

    I don’t think my site is being backed up currently. Can you recommend any good backup plugins?

    My hosting provider mentioned about the site’s server logs, which only logs 7 days and found nothing.

    I’ve uploaded a lot of images and it’s not on the media page but it is on the ftp server.

    This is so odd – I’ve used wordpress for 10 years now and this never happened to me. I guess I will have to redo all the changes I did.

    Even the JetPack plugin has a backup module/service (VaultPress I think it’s called?)

    It’s a bit more complicated than others I’ve tried but that’s because it’s primary focus and functionality is for cloning sites (database and files) to be able to move those sites to different servers or domains. It can also be used to do backups and reportedly the pro version of the plugin allows you to automate backups and store them offsite (like on Amazon’s s3 servers and other third-party file storage services).
