WordPress REST not always returns default

Hi,

Not sure exactly when this changed, but sometime in the last few months, the wp REST api response started coming back with the default avatar for all authors, all the time.

It does seem to respect when I change the default (any of Gravatar’s ones, or the local default, all work), but it’s always the default one, never the author’s specific one.

I saw several threads from about 2 months ago that had a similar issue, but those were all using the php renderer as far as I can tell. Is it possible that the same fix needs to be applied to whatever function outputs to wp’s REST api?
