• I am using WordPress 2.6 on my own web site (https://www.vert-a-go.com, hosted elsewhere). A few weeks ago I did a clean reinstall of Windows Vista because my laptop had become very bogged down and slow after a year of use. After reinstall, it is running extremely well, web pages are loading very fast, no problems with crashing, etc.

Since I reinstalled, however, the WordPress dashboard has inexplicably slowed to a complete crawl. It takes upwards of 30 seconds to save/publish a post and up to a minute to load blogstats. Any blogging client I try to set up (including the one I was using with no problems before, as well as 2 other new ones) simply times out before it can publish the post.

All other web sites (including my own) load extremely fast. I can use Windows Explorer to manually ftp files to the server no problem; it doesn’t seem to be slow.

I was using WordPress 2.2 before, so I upgraded to WordPress 2.6 last week to see if that would help, but although it is working, the dashboard is still ridiculously slow.

I tried disabling all my plug-ins and that didn’t help–in fact, I now can’t reactivate Blogstats because it takes so long to try and send the API key that it times out and throws up an error. I also tried automatically FTP-updating the new version of Akismet and it times out and won’t upgrade either.

I did a tracert but I don’t really know how to decipher the results; I can post them if need be.

The strange thing is that even when my PC was flakey and slow and crashing all the time, the WordPress dashboard was still really quite fast, and my blogging client worked fine. Now that the PC is running great, my connection speed from WordPress to the file server (and that server alone) has taken a big nosedive.

Can anyone please help me figure out what is going on here? It is becoming virtually impossible for me to post. The problem coincided with the Vista reinstall but I cant see how Vista could kill WordPresss upload and nothing else, and I am at an utter loss as to what to do about it.

Thank you very much in advance!

I’ve since deduced that WordPress.com Stats was killing the dashboard speed. I deactivated it and the dashboard sped up to a good pace again. But I am still getting timeouts on my blogging clients, and when I tried to reactivate Stats as a test later, it would no longer accept my API key–it just throws up an error message saying that WordPress.com cannot communicate with my blog and I should ask my host for help (transport error–HTTP status code was not 200).

I think the reason it was killing my dashboard was because it was having huge problems communicating with the site.

I reinstalled WordPress 2.6 according to these instructions and the situation remained the same.

After my initial email, my host is just blaming Vista. But I feel like there is something else going on here.

(I just tried setting up my husband’s WP blog, hosted by another provider, and it worked perfectly). So I am back to my host :-/ Will post what they find out.

Did you find anything out? I’m having the same problem. I think it’s WP.
