WordPress posts to index.php homepage

I have a website that is a combination of static html pages and WordPress posts. I want the home page “index.php” to be updated with only 5 WordPress posts from my /events WP site whenever I add a new post to that page. Currently, every time I add a post to the /events Worpress page the full page is populated on the homepage. Right now there are 11 posts. I only want five. I thought I could do this in Reading settings by updating ‘Syndication feeds show the most recent” to 5; however that doesn’t seem to work.

Suggestions welcomed.
