• There is a new version of Pictorialis out which fixes a couple of issues that were brought up with the Beta and you can download it from https://weblogtoolscollection.com/b2-img/pictorialis.zip
    Fixes for this version include:
    – Built in EXIF support which does not need pre-compiled EXIF in PHP
    – There is a selection mechanism for versions of GD which makes sure you always get the best possible thumbnails and pictures conversion.
    – This also has some file upload fixes which makes sure that the uploaded files do not get erased before the script gets a chance to grab the files.
    – The installation process has also been better defined with some fixes for the installation troubles reported from the previous version.
As in the pervious version, this new version has the following features:
    – XHTML compliant code
    – Simple once click addition of photos, auto thumbnail and resizing
    – Extraction of EXIF information from original photo and saved as meta
    – Easy installation, as easy as installing WordPress
    – Simple, clean design and look
    – Simple navigation
My example PhotoBlog with WordPress can be found at Pictorialis

  • Pictorialis is really superb, once you get it up and running. But if you don’t have a degree in coding, or the ability to make friends with people who do, I wouldn’t attempt it. The support is shaky, and I suspect it’s because the creator probably didn’t realize how popular this WP rewrite would be. It’s a great idea, but is in desperate need of solid documentation and support. Pictorialis is not for the faint of heart. At all.

What were you smoking when you wrote this? I don’t disagree that it needs some work, and I know for a fact that the author knows this as well. Pictorialis is not a forked version of WP, as you suggest when you call it a “rewrite”, rather it is full-blown WP with some added functionality. The author also has a full-time job and a real life outside of the coding too, so you have to temper your expectations for support and documentation based on that. He could have done this just for himself and his own use, but he choose to let the community have at it.
Feel free to send him suggestions, ideas, and even some code to further the project if you so desire. I know he would appreciate it.

There was no need for you to attack my comment, I was speaking from experience and truth. I made an effort to word my comment with respect, because I do respect what Laughing Lizard has offered to the WP community.
My post was in no way meant as an attack on Pictorialis or it’s creator. I meant it to be a gentle criticism of it’s biggest problem, lack of support and difficulty of set-up.
I stand by my original comment. Pictorialis is not for the inexperienced. Period. At least, not until the support and documentation are in better order. For me, getting that application up and running was a solid month of pure frustration. There were times where I was nearly in tears and wanted to give up on it. But the simple fact that it really is a fantastic application motivated me to keep plugging away until I was able to achieve the end result I was looking for.

Okay. Fine. That’s a matter of semantics. My sincere apologies for using the wrong terminology to describe the application. I only meant to convey that it’s

      not

    a script, and it’s

      not

an add-on. It’s a full application based on WP. That’s all I meant.
I applaud Laughing Lizard for what he’s done and encourage him to continue the project.
You really shouldn’t be so sensitive. I offered honest criticism on the biggest problem LL faces with Pictorialis. Take it or leave it. I don’t feel that my post was insulting or horribly derogatory.

Is there a version of this available for WordPress 1.5 yet?
