• I feel like a fossil, reintroduced to having a website after 5 years of not. Only 28 and Very Confused.

Anyway, I installed WordPress on my server using Fantastico, all seemed good, but the page isn’t showing up. I directed it to /blog/ , not to my homepage. I seem to have sucessfully uploaded a theme update, but there’s nothing to see. Do I need some sort of .html file in the directory for the program to latch on to? Any suggestions? Do I need to humble myself and call bluehost’s helpdesk?

  • Obviously it is NOT in the “blog” directory…

Nothing is in that directory. Does WP make a file with a specific name that I can look for and move?

Fantastico is notorious for uploading 0 kb files. If you can, just delete that installation and do it again because nothing was installed.

    Or
    https://install4free.wordpress.com

portmant: did you make the folder /blog/ before you accessed Fantastico? You have to tell Fantastico the folder name, but that folder can’t already exist (though it should have given you an error….)

samboll: I have done over a hundred Fantastico wp installs, of various versions, on various server configs. NOT ONE TIME has Fantastico “uploaded 0kb files”. NOT ONE TIME has one of my Fantastico installs had any problem. Fantastico is a great service. It works. People on this forum should stop trashing it.

    Hi V,
I’m not trashing fantastico, but I’ve done quite a few installs with it. Most of the time it pops it like it should, but it often loads several key files with 0 kb. Usually a delete and re-install makes it just fine. That’s all I was suggesting.
Believe me I like it a lot as it’s very fast.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did not make the /blog/ folder before the Fantastico install. Instead I told the WordPress dashboard that’s where I wanted the page to be during the initial set up. I’ll try deleting everything and installing again, and if I understand corectly, I’ll make the /blog/ folder as part of the reinstall, when I tell Fantastico where to put everything?

Does it matter that I can see the page now if I type in https://www.port-manteau.com/index.php? Does this mean that I just need to shift some files around? And if so, where?

No – don’t make the folder before you do the install. You did it right the first time. Fantastico makes the folder for you during the install, if you put blog in the text-field where it asks Install in directory….

You could shift the files around, yes. You must have an index.html file in the root, since using your main link shows the “under construction” sort of page. So if you move out of the root folder anything in the way of files or folders with “wp-” in them, and put them in the /blog/ folder, you should be back to square one with wordpress installed where you wanted it to begin with.

If you want to contact me off-forum I’ll see if I can give you some better help: vkaryl_at_bytehaven_dot_com….

We just did the Fantastico thing after figuring out our hosts complicated control panel to set up a subdomain as I already have a site.

By the numbers and techie stuff it looks all good….and we JUST did the nameserver thing from the guys that we registered at so that is a delay…

But on the ftp index the wordpress is not showing like a website but like the back end instead.

    Any ideas?
