    I noticed the gallery page was loading extremely slowly.

    Turns out the thumbnails are actually scaled down full-sized images.

    Looks like WordPress doesn’t create smaller versions of images if the image is very large (4500+ px wide). I tested and it works with images that are 1000px wide.

    Googled and didn’t find anyone else having this issue (hard topic to find).

    Any ideas how to solve this issue?

    (Other than resizing images manually before upload.)

    I can also confirm this.

    Regenerating thumbnails using common plugins also does not fix the issue, if the image is large (Circa 30MB+) the thumbnails will not generate for those images.
