• Every time I try to log into my WordPress dashboard, after entering my username and password and clicking “Log In,” it bumps me over to my site’s homepage. This is happening for all users; I’ve had some of the other writers on my blog try their logins as well.

Then, when I try to return to the login page a second time, the screen just reads “Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.” But it will load the login page again once I clear my cache.

The frontend of the site seems to be working fine, but no one can get into the backend. I believe I’m using the latest WordPress since it typically auto-upgrades (but, of course, can’t get in to check for sure).

Any help appreciated! In 7+ years of running this site, this is a new one for me.

  • Have you tried disabling all plugins by renaming the Plugins folder via cPanel?

If you can login then it will be a plugin problem. Have you installed any new plugins lately or changed the theme?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have not changed the theme any time recently.

I tried disabled all the plugins, but it didn’t help. It did change the message I get on on wp-admin to this:

W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place. Please re-install plugin or remove /home/covermes/public_html/wp-content/advanced-cache.php.
W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place. Please re-install plugin or remove /home/covermes/public_html/wp-content/db.php.
W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place. Please re-install plugin or remove /home/covermes/public_html/wp-content/object-cache.php.

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/covermes/public_html/wp-content/advanced-cache.php:26) in /home/covermes/public_html/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 1216

EDIT: I also just tried changing the name of those three W3 Total Cache Error files. It removes the error, but then when I go to login, goes right back to the homepage.

What if you just rename the cache folder and change the plugins folder back to it’s original name.

It sounds to me it’s the caching plugin. I’ve tried that plugin and all kinds of problems.

The errors will be because you disabled that plugin.

No luck unfortunately. I’ve changed the W3 Total Cache folder name and all the other file names that seem to be associated with it. I’ll delete the plugin anyway once I can get back into my dashboard, but still cannot.

You can delete it from cPanel in the File Explorer but you will also have to look if it has created other directories within wp-content as these will need deleting.

Is there an entry in wp-config for the cache plugin? If so disable or delete it.

.htaccess file is there anything in there from the caching plugin again disable it or delete it.

Your version of PHP is out of date, can you change it to the latest version?

Google Developer Tools under Console is also showing errors. These will need fixing.

Lastly you have an SSL certificate installed and you are using http instead of https in the link above. You are also trying to load mix content (files getting loaded via http and not https) that the browser will block.

HSTS needs to be enabled so that your website is only deliverable via https only as you can still get hacked in Middle of the Man attacks. HSTS needs to enabled in the .htaccess file in the root of your website normally public_html. But make sure you make a back up of it first so if anything goes wrong you can add it back in.

Just maybe fixing these problems might solve your problems.

If you need help fixing it just let me know on here.

Read this report about your website: https://www.htbridge.com/ssl/?id=yZDeFe6J

In the section below called 3rd Party Content Analysis the items in orange need sorting out as this is where the mix content errors are coming from.

This guys website shows you how you score with web security and how to solve the problems.
