WordPress loading very slow (already tried plugins etc)

I already tried turning off plugins, especially lightroom, which did not do much… my site can take as much as 30 seconds to load.
I installed firebug on firefox and watched it unfold. There are a lot of 404 errors as it loads… and those errors each take 2 to 8 seconds.
