• I host my own WordPress and have done so for some years now.

Yesterday, my host have had to disable feeds on my account after they noticed “my account was consuming large amount of CPU time with requests originating from, and directed at the local server”, in their own words.

They tried to explain further by saying “The requests were coming from the local server, so it seemed to be that =he RSS feed was being read by the application itself – this is rather o=d as a local application would have better ways of accessing the data.”

I am not technical so understand very little of this, but I am a bit confused as I haven’t changed anything apart for updating some plugins the night before, but none which would seem to use feeds.

Obviously, I’d like to get in a position where they can turn feeds back on, sooner rather than later. Can anyone help with the matter, perhaps by making some suggestions?

    I would appreciate any help.

    Thanks

  • See if your host can provide you with server logs to substaniate their finding. This may help provide more info about the CPU spike due to RSS.

Were you using a RSS widget to load your feed in your sidebar?

Thanks guys for your replies. I’ll ask for the server logs, although I am not sure I’ll understand much about them. Maybe they’ll be.

James, I am using the RSS widget in the sidebar. Could it be what is causing the problem? I have just taken it off and replaced it with the Recent Posts widget, which I think does the same thing.

Yes, if your RSS widget was constantly fetching your own feed, that would explain how “the requests were coming from the local server, so it seemed to be that the RSS feed was being read by the application itself.”

Great, I hope this will resolve the issue. I’ll get in touch with my host and see whether they’re happy to turn the feed back on.

Thank you so much for your help.
