WordPress installation causing excessive server usage, account suspended

  • Hi everybody.
    Lunarpages has suspended my account because they are saying the following:

    Your account was utilizing excessive resources, causing a significant
    degradation of services on the server. This is a shared environment and
    we can not allow one user to utilize the majority of the resources on a
    server as it affects all users adversely. Because of this, you have been
    temporarily suspended.

    A detail of the problem is shown below as:

    This is a standard WP install with only a few standard plugins so I am not sure what to do from a technical standpoint. The site gets no more that 400 + page views a day.

    Any ideas how I can resolve this?

  • Are you loading a lot of remote videos or graphics on your site?
    What they gave you does not mean much. While that is a large spike it means little without knowing what kind of hardware. Usually hosting companies have an issue with sustained CPU utilization or average load. 400 views is not relelvant. Would look at your plugins as the problem first.
    I don’t know Lunarpages but they could be the problem. Many hosting companies have “Unlimited” plans which means unlimited until they say you are using too much resources. (Read your TOS) Some don’t allow much with those accounts as they stuff thousands of accounts on a single server with older hardware. If that is the case, changing to another hosting company or account level might fix it.

    Every day there is a new YouTube video on the site but that is using the YouTube embedded code. I had kind of assumed that because it was stored on YouTubes servers it shouldn’t cause an issue.

    All plugins except for WP Super Cache and Askimet have been disabled.

    Did you ever find a resolution to this? It just happened to me… ??

    This is a not uncommon problem that seems to revolve around wp-cron file which eats up alot of CPU cycles sometimes. It is one of those gremlins that pops up from time to time. There is a workaround but that is not 100% as I was just suspended too and am working to fix it.
    wp-cron began its life as a plugin that was later included in the core of WordPress. In part, this gives the ability to schedule posts to appear in the future. For me, that’s pretty helpful. However, it can get stuck in a loop and consume enormous amounts of CPU cycles.
    Apparently it is not common enough to garner any repair or investigation by the WP programmers to fix it once and for all.
    Here is a link for some information that is probably outdated but worth reading anyway. Be sure your isp has the most current apache running.
    Here is the link to the workaround which doesn’t really fix the problem but may buy you sometime.
    Let me be clear: I love WordPress. I think it is hands down the top blogging platform available. The people who work on it are really stellar folks who have poured countless hours into developing and maintaining this package. Words can never say enough. But this is a problem that ought to be examined. Its one of those issues that gets overlooked until it happens to you.
