WordPress Importer not working

We want to test our content in a new theme. So we set up a test domain and wanted to import all the content from our live site. Both site are on 3.2. I exported All via the export option since I had read that was the only way to get all related information as well as the feature image which we have on every one of our posts. I imported into our test site, but no posts showed up. It displayed some messages that the image was already present but this wouldn’t indicate a problem or would it.

Any advice would be appreciated on moving all the content to this test domain.
