• I think this plugin should be handed over to a developer due to it’s demand yet lack of support from the community. I just think a new approach is needed and that this plugin does not need to be one of the “wordpressdotorg” repositories. I know any developer would struggle to respond to every post in the plugins current state but that would change with some love giving to this software.

A developer could possible create a pro edition of it to fund their time and drive improvement of the free edition. I would do that and I would take on the task. Could be other developers willing to and with more connection to the www.remarpro.com team though.

What lack of community support? Also as this (and all repo software) is GPL’ed you or anyone can fork the code so there’s not anything that needs handing over. ??

I don’t understand how relaxed people are regarding the WordPress brand/image. Either the star ratings mean something or they don’t. If they do, then this 2 star plugin is bad apple in the WP cart. Some threads suggest people are spending hours or even days trying to complete import.

It just doesn’t look great consider how highly demanded the plugin is. I’m just saying I’d throw this bad apple out of the cart and if some scrounger wants to pick it up so be.

Despite my opinion I do plan to have a look at the plugin while making my own XML importer and hopefully provide some fixes ??

That’s sadly an unfortunate consequence of volunteer support forums. It’s not ideal, but generally the forums do work.

I don’t understand how relaxed people are regarding the WordPress brand/image.

For many of us there’s bigger things to look after than branding. For example: I myself want to know how to make the support a better experience for everyone. We all have our own little areas of concern. ??

Have you ever noticed that no one posts when a plugin works satisfactorily? That plugin is not perfect and some do have problems with it. But generally (and I’m just guesstimating here) the results of this plugin are favorable.

I do plan to have a look at the plugin while making my own XML importer and hopefully provide some fixes ??

    That’s the spirit! ??

Please let me know if you get a better one developed. I’ve been trying to transfer posts/pages from one to the other in 4.0 and it doesn’t work. I have yet to find an alternative and per the forums, several people are having this problem and no solution is being offered.

Well it was just an idea ??

It looks like I’ve found my place to focus on and return something to WordPress.

Jan Dembowski this month marks my 5th year working with WordPress. I remember your from the start and have always appreciate your support. All of my comments are specifically regarding this plugin I just want to be clear on that. I’m at a stage where I now feel I can and want to contribute to WP. I just need to update my newbie plugins for sake of reputation first ??

Greencrest there are other importer plugins worth exploring. Data exporting from WordPress can be imported using other tools.

WebTechGlobal, please give examples of alternative plugins i can use to export wordpress. I’m stranded right now.

aristosoft the WP exporter itself works fine as far as I know. The exported file does not need to be imported with “WordPress Importer” as other plugins can import it instead. Once you have expoted just go to install a new plugin from your admin and search “XML importer”.

Ryan, I could not find an xml importer, can you? If so, can you give us a link or at least an exact title for the importer? thanks.

I can only suggest Google. I wouldn’t recommend a specific plugin because those guys are making hundreds per day from pro importers and some of them use unethical methods to improve their sales which I’ve been victim of multiple times. There is no way I’m pasting their landing page URL.

I only go as far as mentioning their solutions exist for the sake of you exploring other options yourself.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

Can someone enlighten me on “other tools” that can be used for exporting/importing? I am fully aware of PHPMyAdmin which needs to be adjusted for WPv3.8 to v4.0 (there is one new table row in 4.0).

Just need to know if there is a csv ex/importer as well.

@wtg – Get a fork going on Github and I would be glad to contribute. I think there needs to be a more ‘universal’ ex/import tool which would take advantage of the csv format as well as xml and MySQL formats.

I most definitely agree that ex/im is a “top-of-the-list” plugin/need for WP and I hope you have started something (big*).

*ex/import should be a core component of WP. Most definitely a very secure component as well. One that could not be used at a whim but would provide a better alternative to BackUp plugins as well.

We agree, this plugin could use some additional work. 3.3 is not a great rating. And we have personally had problems with support it.

We are not sure that handing it over to another developer is necessarily the only or even best answer.

It appears that many people in the support forums have offered additional help, but their suggestions or even code improvements have not been used.

@tradesouthwest’s suggestion of putting code in github would make it easier for the community to contribute and lessen the burden on this guy named “wordpressdotorg” who seems to be a bit overwhelmed.

Ok, well I can say that I have transferred about 50 sites using this plugin. There have been glitches, but overall it has saved me many many hours of manual work.

I had one site that just wouldn’t export. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get it to work, and finally contacted my host. They had some setting in place for security that was keeping me from doing the export. They changed it long enough for me to do the export and it worked nicely.

I did have to break one huge site down into multiple exports/imports, but that was ok, too.

And for everyone who is having problems with the images pointing to their old sites, there is a plugin to fix that! It’s called Import External Images, and can help in some cases. I also used a plugin called “seo transporter” (I think!) to move all my meta tags to the new format.
