I REALLY feel like an idiot because I am completely lost, maybe one of you can put me out of my misery?!

I had someone build my website for me with wordpress. I now have a login at https://www.mywesbite.com/wp-login.php. I can go in and edit the website but only very basic bits, like the content of the pages themselves, not the header, footer or actual design, which are actually those that I want to update!

Now this is where I am lost.Should I have a wordpress software running on my computer too to edit the design features? I’ve read through bits on the wordpress site but cannot seem to find info on ‘how to install when your website is already set up’. Following the install guide seems wrong as the website is already running??!!

I also get the message ‘WordPress 2.7.1 is available! Please notify the site administrator.’ I’m sure I’ll work that out later.

The guy who built the website I cannot get a hold of and will be able to for a while. I have no other contacts who could help me.
It’s that basic point that I don’t get. Once that’s answered I’ll be fine I am sure.

    What now? Please?

    Thanks :o)

    in the wordpress theme editor
    admin – appearance – editor

    ok. I was too eager.

I don’t even know how to get there, samboll.

My interface when I log into https://www.mywesbite.com/wp-login.php. looks like this: https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/wordpress25.jpg without the “Design” bit.

Is that because I had some else build the website for me and I do not actually have wordpress installed on my computer? (no php files….)
Is that something I must do first? How? Or is that unneccessary because it’s installed on the server?

I am using version 2.5 must I update first? How?

I am SO lost and really missing something!
    Who can help please?

Do you login as administrator or as author or subscriber or something?

    at https://www.mywebsite/wp-login.php
it asks for username and password.
    That’s what I provide.

Then I arrive at the dashboard:
    https://www.mywebsite.com/wp- admin /index.php

I assume I log in as the administrator then?!

Are you saying it’s possible that my webdesigner only gave me a user account?

sorry – wasn’t aware you were using an old version
    access theme editor here
    admin – design – editor

you don’t have to have files on your computer for site to work

    admin – design – editor

There is no admin and no design option.

    The dashboard menu reads:

    Write Manage Comments

From there I can edit text/ pictures on each page.
But I can’t find a way to change the general layout of the site.

Should I just update to 2.71 to make it easier?

My guess (indeed) is that the person who built the website is the admin and you are contributor or author so you simply don’t have the rights to do what you want to do.

Do you log in with “admin” or with another username?

    I agree with Gangleri

I log in with a username!

I will try to find the admin login then.
    I’ll report back.

Thank you to you both! :o)

Changed the admin password and I am IN! :o)

    stamford,

how did you change the admin password. I am having the same problem. I had someone build the site for me which makes them the sites admin. I log in with a username and password and have limited access to plug-ins that have been added. On the dashboard i can write, comment, add media, links, pages. I also have access to the polls but not to things like the subscribe2, which is something I need access too because I cannot see who’s subscribing to my site.

any help is appreciated on how I can get total access to my site.
