• The site goes down about every 2 or 3 days. I call my host and they get it going again.

It appears to be a vulnerability within WordPress that attackers like to cause havoc with. They access a file or files on the sever in a way that uses all of the servers resources. One of the suggestions was to update WordPress which I was able to do but it hasn’t made a difference.

I’ve checked file permissions. How would I go about finding out how this is happening? The error we get when it goes down is “Error establishing a database connection” it happens on the main site and the admin.

That’s not “a vulnerability within WordPress,” what you’re describing is a standard DDoS attack which can affect any kind of site: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack

A good hosting provider should be able to leverage security tools on their end to mitigate this for you, as it is the hosting provider’s responsibility to provide basic server security.

I recommend getting back in touch with them to ask for assistance in mitigating this type of attack as there is very little you can do yourself at that scale.
