WordPress Event Calendar SlideShowPro

  • I volunteer with a non-profit that works in sustainability, permaculture and natural buiding education. We needed a super simple CMS and event calendar. I’ve been wanting to build a WordPress site for awhile. I formerly used Greymatter to build CMS sites way back in the day, and then moved on to Movable Type… but had not got the opportunity to use WordPress on a real project until 2007.

    I must say the software has made leaps and bounds… It’s now my recommendation for clients who want a site “that I can build myself”. WordPress is truly simple to use — right out of the box — and plugins and templates are so easy to implement that I find myself recommending it more and more to clients who I would have formerly steered toward Joomla. It’s just much less of a headache to configure for a client to use than Joomla, which pretty much requires a pay-to-play theme and JCE editor to make easy and pretty enough for a client to consider. And at that point, the cost becomes an issue.

  • I like how you can tell right away what the site is about. The events plugin is well executed! Your subpages are disappearing though in Safari Mac. For example see this page: https://svionline.org/who-we-are/board-of-directors/ (the green bar is blank)

    This is really coool, what theme did you use? I am brand new to WordPress and dont know any css yet. I like the top bars for navigation

    I’ve been researching WordPress for the next incarnation of my site. Your site is the first I’ve seen that doesn’t look like a template. It looks like a design driven site as opposed to one that was built around the platform. Congratulations. If you can give me any advice on how to approach my site, I’m all ears!!!

    Hey, sorry for the long delay, I wish this forum had a “subscribe” feature so I’d know when a thread I’ve posted gets some comments.

    To answer some questions, the theme was based on the Upsilon theme from LivingOS – https://themes.livingos.com/ I added quite a few modifications to make it work with sidebar plugins and integrate the flash slideshow.

    The blank green bar on some pages is OK because it only shows links if the page has subpages. maybe I need to rethink that and have it collapse if there are no subpage links.

    I’m thinking of doing a redesign of the homepage to make it less bloggy and get rid of some of the sidebar stuff that’s not needed. Plus I’d like to widen the template a bit.

    We are loving WordPress with EventCalendar 3.1.1rc — it’s great for churches and non-profits and small businesses. Configured correctly, it’s a serious search traffic magnet.

    We’ve also added cFormsII plugin for event registration, and it has seriously added to the number of folks who are coming to our events… I think it gives them the impetus to register and commit, and then the follow-up communication seals the deal.
