• Hi all,

As of yesterday, my business blog, lovingly created using wordpress has been down; any call to the blog engine (including admin.php) crashes the server process and creates a core dump on the blog directory.

I ‘ve tried to replicate the problem and it seems that as as of yesterday *something changed* on my hosting provider and crashes the blog engine on some kind of database activity. Specifically
    – I ‘ve tried clean installs of WordPress 2.1, 2.0.7. 2.0.1 and 1.5.2 and the blog engine crashes on step 2 of the installation process; it prints something like ‘creating tables for your database’ and then.. nothing. Thereafter, ALL calls to the database engine return a 500 Internal Server Error and generate a 2.5MB core dump file.

    – If I drop or empty the tables from the database, I can run install.php again, but then on step 2 the story repeats.

I have searched high and low but can’t find what’s to blame. BTW, here’s some environment variables:
    Operating system Linux
    Kernel version 2.4.21-47.0.1.ELsmp
    Machine Type i686
    Apache version 1.3.37 (Unix)
    PERL version 5.8.7
    Path to PERL /usr/bin/perl
    Path to sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail
Installed Perl Modules Click to View
    PHP version 4.4.4
    MySQL version 4.1.21-standard

This is my business blog which has been down 24+ hours and it’s becoming a nightmare.. Any help will be much appreciated ! (the hosts at Lunarpages.com seem unable to fix this..and will be losing me as a customer pretty soon).

If it’s crashing and generating a core dump only on the mysql calls, then I’d think that they upgraded PHP and forgot to upgrade the associated mysql libraries. But that’s a wild guess, I haven’t got enough information.

Tell them to fix it or you switch hosts. Simple enough. ??

    Thanks Otto42

Lunarpages mentioned they upgraded some components on my shared server. I also have another account with them (on which WP runs fine) and the differences are:

    (WP-broken:)
    Kernel version 2.4.21-47.0.1.ELsmp
    MySQL version 4.1.21-standard
    cPanel Build 10.9.0-RELEASE 118

    (WP working:)
    Kernel version 2.4.21-37.ELsmp
    MySQL version 4.0.25-standard
    cPanel Build 10.9.0-RELEASE 79

The PHP version is 4.4.4 on both. Any idea of what might be the exact root of the problem ?

    Thanks again,

    Andreas

P.S. I ‘ll give them a few more hours and then switch hosts if I have to. After 3 phone calls and 4 emails, Lunarpages support is really disappointing.
