Most of the links on this page (and other pages) work as required. For example, click on the image for 500 and you get a page with prices for that stamp. However, neither 502d nor 502e work; they both get to non-existent posts (the site has no posts). I have freshly uploaded both those pages, but WordPress forces their slugs to be USA-502d-1 and USA-502e-1 (sometimes it seems to force them to -2 instead of -1). I do not have any pages with the “proper” slugs, i.e. without the -1. If you use the Search For Catalog Number box on the right, then it gets to the correct page.

Any idea how I can stop WP forcing the slugs just for these two stamps to be “…-1” ?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Are you sure you don’t have anything in your trash with that slug. When wp adds -1 or some number, it means there’s already a page or post with that slug / title

Hi – I wasn’t aware that there was any Trash in the WP system – how do I find it ?

If you go to All Pages or All Posts, there is a trash link at the top along with drafts and published. If you don’t see it, then you don’t have any files in trash.

When you delete a post or page, WordPress first puts them in the trash and then you have to empty trash to completely get rid of them.

Thank-you – I hadn’t noticed that ! However, even if I delete permanently all pages in the Trash, delete the 502d page and reload it from my database, it still enforces a slug of USA_502d-2. If I try to edit the Permalink, it reverts back to -2. I have tried to search the WP database, but cannot find a plugin which inspects the slugs. I have used the Admin Columns plugin, which allows me to sort all 1000 pages by slug, but no USA_502d appears !

    Any other ideas ?

If WordPress keeps adding the -# to a post, it means there is already a post or image that has that url / slug. I forgot to mention images. they get a slug too.

Thank you very much indeed – that was it ! I do remember now that when I first set the site up, I had to make sure that the pages were loaded before the images. I had totally forgotten that – thanks again.

    Glad it worked.
