• I have noticed that latest wordpress download files are named “latest.tar.gz” and their size is 1.210 Kb. Previously their name was a clearer “wordpress-1.5.1.2.tar.gz” with size of 291 Kb. Moreover Winzip does not like the format of “latest.tar.gz”. Any explanations? Thank you.

  • Actually, latest.tar.gz should morph into wordpress-VERSION.tar.gz. I just grabbed it and it showed the correct name/version, and was only 290K (or so). Perhaps it was a brief hiccup on the server?

Thank you Kafkaesqui, I kept trying for a few days but I always get a file “latest.tar.gz” with size 1.210 Kb from my home PC (Windows 98 4.10.2222 A, Internet Explorer 6.0.2600.0000). Anyway, I was able to get the correct file from a friend, so I guess I am OK now. Thanks again.

Why not name the .tar.gz on the main download page with the version number as well? For people who are really attached to latest.tar.gz, just make that a symlink to the latest version.

I find latest.tar.gz to be annoying because whenever I download with wget I have to add something like “-O wordpress-1.5.2.tar.gz” to the command-line so that I can remember what the heck it is that I downloaded.

Many hosting providers with automated WordPress installers rely on the “latest.tar.gz” format in order to insure that their installer installs the latest version of WordPress.
